Churros with chocolate
For those with a sweet tooth “churros con chocolate” is a must. “Churros” are a type of fried dough and can be eaten for breakfast, as a snack on the street or as dessert after lunch or dinner. These are often ordered with hot chocolate into which they are dipped combining to form a delicious treat. They come in two sizes, porras are thicker and bigger and churros, of smaller size.
Torrijas
“Torrijas” are another delicious sweet dish that can be found in Madrid around Easter time. Similar to French toast, they are thick slices of bread soaked in milk, dipped in egg, fried and sweetened. Another must if you visit Madrid in spring time!
Rosquillas de San Isidro
“Rosquillas de San Isidro” are small homemade donuts which are typical in May when the city of Madrid celebrates the festivities of their saint patron, San Isidro. There are different varieties, the “smart” ones topped with fondant sugar, and the “dumb” ones, just plain with no coating.
Barquillos
“Barquillos” are sweet tubes made of crunchy biscuit that can be covered in chocolate. They can be purchased in street stalls in the spring months to celebrate San Isidro, the patron of Madrid.
Violet sweets
“Caramelos violeta” are violet coloured hard boiled sweets that were first made over a hundred and fifty years ago. They make a lovely typical Madrid gift if you are thinking about something traditional to take back home after your visit.
Bones of the saint
This dessert is made with marzipan (almond paste) shaped into a small tube filled with egg yolk sweet. The shape of this dessert resembles that of a bone, as they are white and long. They are prepared to celebrate All Saints’ Day on November 1st.
Crown of La Almudena
The Crown of Almudena is a variation of the “Roscón de Reyes”, prepared in honor of the Virgin of Almudena, patron saint of Madrid as well as of the pastry guild. That’s why you’ll find them for sale in November, when the festivity of this virgin is celebrated (November 9th). The Crown of Almudena can be filled with cream, whipped cream, and truffle.
