Located in the heart of Madrid, this beautiful park is filled with sculptures, fountains, gardens and even a lake.
The Velázquez Palace and the Crystal Palace are located within Retiro Park which makes it even more special.
People in Spain call it “Parque del Retiro” since it was considered a retreat location for the kings of Spain in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was only in 1868 that it was opened for the public.
The Royal Palace, located inside the park, was destroyed by the Napoleonic attacks back in 1808. However, the remains of this magnificent palace remain inside Retiro.
The Retiro Peak hosts more than 15,000 trees, for that reason, many call it the lung of Madrid.
Retiro park is an absolute hotspot for people who come to enjoy a moment of peace away from hectic city life. You will find plenty of activities to do in a day out in this beautiful place: from sightseeing, making a pic nic, going for a walk, visit the monuments, rent a small paddle boat on the lake or visiting its gardens, it is definitely worth a visit, whether you’re visiting or living in Madrid.
