Madrid is a very active city and has a very rich gastronomic history.
Madrid´s typical markets are much more than a place to sell food – they are social places, meeting points, the centre of the Spanish culture.
You will find quality products as well as a place to hang out with friends and meet people.
A must stop when you visit Madrid or if you live there.
Here are three of the best markets to go to when in Madrid:
One of the oldest markets in the world, the Mercado San Miguel offers a wide variety of Spanish gastronomy – from tapas, paella, bacalao and cheese to churros con chocolate.
It first opened in 1916 and later, in 2009 it became the first gastronomic market in Madrid. It is an historical building that holds this great place and you will be able to try foods from every corner of Spain. You can even find Michelin star restaurants there – artisan ice cream (Joan Roca), traditional rice (Rodrigo de la Calle) or the traditional tapas (Grupo Arzabal), this market is a must see when you are in Madrid. You can enjoy great wines from the best wineries in the country.
Definitely a must when in Madrid!

Contrary to Mercado San Miguel, the Mercado San Leopoldo is new in town. It is in a prime location – Paseo de Castellana – it has 12 gastronomic spots situated around a plaza, perfect layout to spend time with friends. You will be able to try the kitchen of several well-known places, like Casa Dani (that serves its famous awarded traditional tortilla de patata), Juancho´s BBQ (knows for the best burgers in Spain), D´Augusto (with its delicious pizzas), amongst many other great places to eat.
Leopoldo Guzman (CEO and founder) decided to invest here when he saw – what used to be a commercial space in Calle Leopoldo – was available to invest. He decided to start this market and to name it Mercado Leopoldo. It was totally remodelled and has now a bar area where drinks are served, a space where several activities for kids hold place as well as activities for adults and then of course the restaurants mentioned above. It is planned to find several new stations for Christmas so it will be the perfect time to visit!
The opening times are:
