First división football in Madrid

Amongst the many attractions offered by the city of Madrid, we cannot forget about football, the sport that ignites passions around the world. Madrid can boast of having 4 teams in the First Division of the Spanish League in the 2023-2024 season, more than any other autonomous community in Spain. Let’s take a look at the 4 clubs. 

1. Real Madrid

Undoubtedly, it is one of the most prestigious and beloved clubs on the planet. Real Madrid has followers on every continent, and the most renowned football stars have passed through its ranks. The club was founded on March 6, 1902, ironically by the Catalan Juan Padrós. Real Madrid has won 14 European Cups and 35 league titles. Their famous stadium, the Santiago Bernabéu, is undergoing a wonderful renovation that will allow it to accommodate 81,044 spectators and provide maximum comfort, incorporating state-of-the-art technologies. The works are expected to be completed in 2024.

The Santiago Bernabéu stadium is located at Avenida de Concha Espina 1, in the Chamartín district of Madrid. You can take a stadium tour starting from 25 euros.

2. Atlético de Madrid

It is the eternal rival of the Madrid team in the capital. Founded on April 26, 1903, it is therefore one of the oldest clubs in Spain and one of the most successful ones, having won numerous national and international titles. Atlético de Madrid was founded as a Madrid branch of Athletic Bilbao, hence the white and red colours of their strip. After leaving the Vicente Calderón stadium in the southern part of Madrid, in 2017 the club moved to its new, much more modern and spacious stadium, with a capacity of 70,460 spectators, the Wanda Metropolitano. The stadium is located at Avenida Luis Aragonés, 4 in the San Blas-Canillejas neighborhood of Madrid. Different stadium tours are available starting from 16 euros.

3. Rayo Vallecano

Another team from Madrid, from the Vallecas district, is Rayo Vallecano. Founded on May 29, 1924, it is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The club has competed 19 seasons in the Spanish first division and they participated in the UEFA Europa League in the 2000-2001 season. It is especially known for being a local, working-class club, very different from the two big teams mentioned earlier. Its headquarters are in the Estadio de Vallecas, with a capacity of 14,708 spectators. If you feel like cheering for Rayo Vallecano and enjoying the stadium atmosphere, you will find it at Calle del Payaso Fofó, 0, in Puente de Vallecas.

4. Getafe Club de Fútbol

Getafe Club de Fútbol is the youngest of the First Division teams in the Madrid community, as it was founded on July 8, 1983. Its first participation in the top category was in the 2004-2005 season, where it remained until 2016 and returned again in 2017 until now. It has also had the honor of participating in European competitions. Getafe’s stadium is called Coliseum and has a capacity of 16,500 spectators. It is located at Avenida Teresa de Calcuta in Getafe.
