Bit by bit, and without realising, we are approaching the night of Halloween, the event which generates frights, spookiness and fun in equal measure. This celebration has steadily been gaining popularity amongst young and old in Madrid.
The truth is that this is a relatively new celebration in Madrid, imported from other countries, but every year it gains more and more followers. Traditionally, Spaniards have celebrated (and still do) November 1st. This day is known as Día de Todos los Santos or All Saints’ Day and is a time to remember all the saints and martyrs of Christian history. However, Madrid is an open and fun-loving city, and it has also embraced Halloween, celebrated on the night of October 31st.
On a culinary level, two desserts stand out as the stars of Madrid’s pastry scene during this time: the delicious buñuelos de viento, small fried dough balls filled with delicious cream, custard or chocolate, and also huesos de santo (Saint’s bones) which are made with marzipan. These treats are a must so why not head to one of the many delightful pastry shops in Madrid, such as La Mallorquina, one of the city’s century-old bakeries.
Now it’s time to explore some of the many fun options available to enjoy Halloween in Madrid. Although the number of activities is never-ending, here are some of the most terrifyingly fun plans you can enjoy:
- Parque de atracciones de Madrid, a classic attraction that never disappoints. From October 5th to November 3rd there are themed rides, shows and parades complete with ghosts, zombies and assorted creatures of the undead waiting for you to enjoy with family or friends.
- Parque Warner, another must-visit at this time of the year if you are brave enough to face your fears. With a special program for all ages, the park welcomes visitors with shows, rides, and street performances from October 2nd to November 3rd (open from Wednesday to Sunday). For the bravest, there are five Halloween mazes you can’t miss, with one of them specially designed for children.
- Circo de los Horrores “Requiem, Final Symphony,” which will be Suso Silva’s farewell to his career, devoted to the characters that have been a part of him throughout his life. This show will run from 24th October to 12th January 2025, at IFEMA, Madrid.
If you prefer a different and unique experience, why don’t you try the Partybus? This is the perfect place to throw your private Halloween party while you are being driven around our beautiful city and taken to the restaurants, bar or nightclubs of your choice. An unforgettable experience!
This list wouldn’t be complete if it did not include escape rooms at places like Aventurico or Fox in a Box, which have prepared special Halloween sessions filled with mysterious and terrifying puzzles for you to decipher.
For younger children who want to enjoy Halloween without getting too scared, there are options like Hallosweet at Sweet Space, a candy museum that is celebrating Hallosweet with spooky treats. You can find it at the ABC Serrano Shopping Centre.
At Casa de México, kids can decorate their own sugar skulls or clay skulls and experience a fun cultural celebration with their family. Día de Muertos is a huge celebration in Mexico that can be enjoyed here too. How lucky!
Finally we recommend that you enjoy Halloween in Madrid in your preferred style, but don’t forget to let us know which of the suggestions above gave you a frightfully good time!
